WAYNE BRADY
2017 “But You LOOK Good” Inspiration Award Recipient
Introduction
Karyn Buxman (Host): Wayne Brady has been selected to be the recipient of the 2017 But You Look Good Inspiration Award. Wayne was chosen because, as someone who has personally journeyed through the darkness of depression, he inspires others in the midst of their challenges and triumphs. Thank you, Wayne, for your courage to share your story publicly and to use your platform as a positive voice, providing hope for so many.
Wayne Brady’s Acceptance Speech
Hey there. This is Wayne Brady. And I’m so happy that I was named the 2017 Invisible Disabilities Association’s recipient of the But You Look Good Award. That makes me so happy, I can’t even tell you. As someone who struggled with depression for years and kept it under wraps, kept it a secret—and as we all know, secrets do kill. So don’t keep a secret like that. Don’t hurt yourself like that.
Understanding Invisible Disabilities
And it makes me happy, especially to hear the words invisible disabilities. Not everyone knows—most people don’t know what’s going on with someone at any given time just because it doesn’t manifest itself on the outside, just because we walk around with a smile.
The weight that you deal with, the pain that you go through, the fact that I could share that with the world, the fact that you people there in that room can share it with each other, it’s so humbling. And thank you for honoring me. I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there with you.
A Commitment to Joy and Perseverance
Right now, you might hear some noise. I’m here on the set of “Let’s Make A Deal.” I’m getting ready to go out and do another taping for the day, which is why I couldn’t join you. But just know that I’m supremely honored and keep on with the good fight.
So I’m gonna go back in here and make these people happy, and you keep doing your thing and make yourself happy. Take care, y’all. Bye.
