Matthania Volmy - IDA Ambassador - Invisible Disabilities Association

Matthania Volmy

Matthania Volmy wants to help spread awareness, education, support, and resources to millions living with invisible disabilities like herself that their disability does not define who they are and cannot limit them from any goals they have set for their life. Matthania resonates with the following quote, “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow” (Mary Radmacher). Matthania says this reminds her to keep pushing forward and never underestimate the power of her strength.

IDA Ambassador – Virginia

Matthania Volmy is so thankful and blessed to have an association that TRULY sees and understands her. It all started with a simple google search “invisible disability”, and Matthania said this was NOT a coincidence. Matthania is a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, NOT by chance. It is through the Invisible Disabilities Association that Matthania was not only able to speak out about her invisible disability, but also the invisible disabilities of others as well. Matthania’s passion is to be a voice for others with invisible disabilities. Matthania wants to envision a world where people like herself are Invisible No More.

Matthania Volmy has a chronic medical condition called scoliosis. When people see Matthania, they may look at her appearance and assume nothing is wrong with her. However, they do not know that Matthania is an individual living with scoliosis. Matthania is an avid dancer and she uses dance, pilates, and physical therapy exercises to strengthen her core. One of Matthania’s favorite books is “But You Look Good” by Sherri and Wayne Connell. Matthania said the reason why she likes this book is because it helps others understand what people with invisible disabilities like herself go through. Matthania said if she could describe this book in four words it would be: prescriptive, supportive, compassionate, and relatable.

Matthania received her dual Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Services and Sociology of Health and Society from the University at Buffalo. Subsequently, Matthania received her Master’s of Science in Health Care Management from Marymount University. Throughout these years, Matthania was involved in various professional development opportunities such as: being a Student Ambassador, Intern for Domestic and International Student Medical Insurance, and Co-Founder of the National Capital of Healthcare Executives: Student Leadership Committee. Matthania was able to work alongside her colleagues in developing a community for students that aimed to foster personal, academic, and professional growth. Today, Matthania is a Health Policy Analyst for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Matthania actively partook in the Invisible Disabilities Walk and Roll because she wanted to encourage, educate, and support millions touched by illness, pain, and disability like herself. Matthania believes that every person has a purpose no matter what obstacles they may face in life.
