Diagnosed as an adult with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD (AuDHD), Jessica Hicksted, PhD MISM, brings her life experiences and education to advocate for people with invisible disabilities. She has faced many challenges, including sustain injuries during military service, which she overcame with resiliency and determination. She is a mother to two sons with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder.
Jessica obtained her PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology and her Masters of Information System Management from Walden University. Jessica works by day as a software developer and heads the ASCEND disability ERG at CACI International. Additionally, she works with ND Outloud! as a research advocate. At international conferences and corporate forums, Jessica illuminates the complexities of invisible disabilities, challenging stereotypes and championing workplace inclusivity. Her groundbreaking work includes the development of a pioneering survey, gauging the stigma surrounding invisible disabilities.
By dissecting acceptance, ableism, and advocacy, Jessica sheds light on dynamics affecting disclosure decisions in professional settings. Her research not only exposes the barriers faced by individuals with invisible disabilities but also unveils pathways to positive change.
Jessica’s insights pave the way for organizations to foster environments of understanding and support. Through her work, she emphasizes shifts in workplace culture, enhancing performance and satisfaction for all. Jessica pursues social progress by dismantling barriers and fostering inclusive environments where every individual thrives.
