Heidi Hanna PhD

Heidi Hanna PhD has been selected to be the 2026 recipient of IDA’s Healthy Humor IDEAS Award. Heidi has been chosen because, as an integrative neuroscientist, Chief Energy Officer of Synergy Brain Fitness, and New York Times bestselling author, her own personal journey navigating severe anxiety, depression, and high sensitivity served as the ultimate catalyst for her life’s work. Driven by this lived experience, Heidi has dedicated over two decades to decoding the profound relationship between brain health, stress mastery, and the healing power of laughter.

As a Certified Humor Professional (CHP) and former National Board member for the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH), Heidi has brilliantly framed therapeutic humor as a vital “mental massage” capable of reducing cognitive inflammation and sparking neurological recovery. By co-founding the non-profit Beyond Funny Project, she turned personal adversity into a mission that empowers individuals facing the invisible toll of chronic illness to strategically use humor to alter brain chemistry, build psychological resilience, and actively shift their mindset from surviving to thriving.

Healthy Humor IDEAS Award

Heidi Hanna PhD’s life work is deeply rooted in her own lived experience navigating severe anxiety, depression, and high sensitivity. Rather than allowing these invisible challenges to limit her potential, facing the silent weight of these conditions served as the ultimate catalyst for her career as an integrative neuroscientist, Chief Energy Officer of Synergy Brain Fitness, and New York Times bestselling author. Driven by a passionate commitment to help others facing their own invisible struggles, Heidi has dedicated over two decades to decoding the complex relationships between brain health, stress mastery, and neurological healing.

Recognizing the profound connection between joy and brain chemistry, Heidi expanded her focus to pioneer the scientific application of therapeutic humor for individuals dealing with invisible disabilities and chronic illness. As a Certified Humor Professional (CHP) and former National Board member for the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH), she eloquently frames humor as a vital “mental massage” capable of reducing cognitive inflammation, sparking neurological recovery, and promoting deep emotional healing.

To extend these practical tools to broader communities, Heidi co-founded the non-profit Beyond Funny Project, turning personal adversity into a mission that empowers people to strategically use laughter to alter brain chemistry. Her work helps individuals build psychological resilience and actively shift their mindset from surviving to thriving, proving that therapeutic humor and play are essential strategies for navigating life’s most challenging invisible burdens.
